In the 1970s, Dean published a series of fairy tales retold and illustrated by Anna and Danuta Dzierżek. They don't appear to have been advertised as a series, but as they share author, illustrator, format, and theme I thought it would be helpful to have a list of them here.
Anna and Danuta Dzierżek
I haven't been able to find out anything definitive about Anna and Danuta Dzierżek. Their surname is Polish and I initially thought they might be sisters, like Janet and Anne Grahame-Johnstone, but I've come to wonder if they were a mother and daughter team.
Based only on her name and the description of her artistic ability, it seems possible that the Anna Dzierzek who appears in Joy Mawby's Footsteps to Freedom is the same Anna. Mawby's book is based on her interview(s) with Anna Dzierżek, and Anna's written memoirs gifted to Joy by Anna's daughter to rework and publish. I've yet to find an affordable local copy of the book, but perhaps someone else who knows can confirm below?
Danuta Dzierzek appears to be the writer and Anna the illustrator of the books they published together. As well as the Dean fairy tale retellings listed below, there is An Alphabet Adventure Story (1978) published by the pair. Anna also illustrated works for other writers, sometimes in conjunction with other illustrators, between the 1970s and 1990s. Notable works include illustration of Catherine Storr's Pied Piper of Hamelin, fairy tale retellings with Mae Broadley, illustrations of Bible stories, illustration for Fran Hunia's Hansel and Gretel (Ladybird), work with Mary Smith and Jo Eaves on The Children's Bedtime Book (World Distributors), and illustrations for the Story Teller magazine.
I found several of Anna's artworks from Rumpelstiltskin (below) and other illustrations for sale at auction houses, where her art medium is described as both 'watercolour' and 'gouache'. Gouache (pronounced 'gwash') is an opaque water medium that forms a thicker layer of paint on the paper surface than watercolour.The Dzierżek-Dean fairytale books
