This small board book of nursery rhymes published by Award Publications is one of the many books Anne Grahame Johnstone illustrated on her own in the 1980s following the untimely death of her sister, Janet, in 1979. It has a companion book, My Best Book of Nursery Rhymes, published in the same year (1985) – see my review.
As with its companion book, it features only five nursery rhymes, each told on one side of a two page spread, while the other side features an illustration. The cover features two children sitting in the crook of a tree branch, reading, the older a boy and the younger a girl. The typeface appears to be hand drawn, as part of the illustration. The back cover features a clock face, with a little mouse reaching towards the clock hands, which point to 1 o'clock.
All of the illustrations have appeared in earlier works. 'Rain' and 'Oranges and Lemons' both appear in Nursery Rhyme Treasury (1970, Young World Productions), and again in My Best Book of Rhymes (1984, Award). The illustrations for 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star', 'Little Jack Horner', and 'Jack Be Nimble' appear in My Best Book of Rhymes (1984, Award).
The illustrations of children in gorgeous period costumes are lovely, and I've shared favourite images of 'Little Jack Horner' and 'Oranges and Lemons' in earlier reviews, so I won't repeat those here. The 2002 reprint of this very small collection is available to read for free at the Internet Archive's Open Library.
